The goal of this interactive workshop will discuss all aspects of harm reduction. Participants will be able to identify at least 3 principles of harm reduction work. Participants will be able to define harm reduction. Participants will also be able to differentiate between a successful harm reduction approach and less successful approaches and identify at least two reasons behind unsuccessful approaches. Participants will be introduced into the diagnostic criteria of the DSM and dimensional criteria of the ASAM 3, in the lens of determining the need of admission to treatment and continued care need from a harm reduction treatment perspective. Participants will be able to identify three different medicated assisted treatments (MAT), and discussion of medicinal marijuana being added as an MAT option.

NOTE: This course satisfies the statutory requirement of one contact hour being in education programs or topics concerning prescription opioid drugs, including the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion. This is pursuant to P.L. 2017, c. 341 for both LPCs 2[12.] 11.2 and LCSWs 2[11.] 10.2.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Workshop participants will be able to define harm reduction.
  2. Workshop participants will be able to identify two harm reduction stances and be able to define the differences between these stances.
  3. Workshop participants will be able to identify at least 3 harm reduction principles
  4. Workshop participants will be able to list how to use the DSM-5 and ASAM 3 criteria to help identify objective criteria to determine admission and/or continuing stay need.
  5. Workshop participants will be able to identify how Motivational Interviewing and Stages of Change can be utilized as a therapeutic style using a harm reduction perspective.

Target Audience: Substance Use Counselors, Clinical Directors, Professional Counselors, Social Workers, DMHAS Licensed Facilities and Case Managers.

Content Level: Social Workers: Course content for this workshop is beginner/intermediate level.

Instructor Biographies:
Glenn Duncan LPC, LCADC, CCS, ACS has been working in the behavioral healthcare field for thirty years. He has lectured nationally on many topics, including clinical supervision. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Clinical Alcohol/Drug Counselor, a Certified Clinical Supervisor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. For 15 years, Glenn served as the Executive Director of Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program, Inc. As Executive Director, Glenn continued to hold a clinical caseload and perform clinical services in addition to his other administrative duties. Glenn specializes in working with clients who have co-occurring substance use disorders, depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders. Glenn served as an expert panel member for a SAMHSA TIPS book on treating sub-acute anxiety in the substance using population.

Since 1999, Glenn has been teaching many courses, including a 45-hour clinical supervision workshop series, Emerging Drugs of Abuse, and The ASAM 3 Criteria. Glenn teaches nationally and is currently a trainer for the Change Companies (the folks who publish the ASAM 3 Criteria Book). Glenn authored a chapter on the use of live supervision in a community treatment organization for the book entitled “The Use of Technology in Clinical Supervision and Training: Mental Health Applications” (2016). Advanced Counselor Training, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP #6532). Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Advanced Counselor Training is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.

Credentialing Information:
This course is approved for 3 NBCC Clock Hours (LPC, LAC, LCADC, CADC, LMFT) of continuing education (NBCC Provider #6532). Harm Reduction: From Principles to Practice, Course #3606, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to be offered by Advanced Counselor Training, LLC as an individual course. Individual courses, not providers, are approved at the course level. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. ACE course approval period: 06/01/2021 – 06/01/2023. Social workers completing this course receive 3 Clinical continuing education credits. Space is limited so save your seat now!

Course Completion Requirements:
To complete this course attendees must remain to the end of the training, and hand in a completed Conference evaluation form to the administrative staff at the completion of the training. Course completion certificates will be handed out by the administrative staff at the end of the training upon receipt of a completed Conference Evaluation.
