Effective Treatment Options At The Counseling Center for Veterans and First Responders During PTSD Awareness Month

June 03, 2024

This month, Praesum Healthcare and The Counseling Center are proud to raise awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by supporting National PTSD Awareness Month. This annual event is dedicated to highlighting mental health issues related to PTSD, reducing stigma, and enhancing access to care.

The good news is that effective treatment for PTSD exists in the United States. Praesum’s centers are among the many accredited facilities aligned with the VA to raise PTSD awareness in June 2024.

PTSD Awareness Month is not just about awareness but also action. Since its inception in tandem with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), The National Center for PTSD has designated June as PTSD Awareness Month to advance public understanding about the disorder, educate a wide audience about PTSD, and provide people affected by PTSD with access to proper treatment.

Understanding PTSD: The Hidden Wounds of War and Emergency Services

PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening or traumatic event. First responders in the U.S. face challenging and dangerous situations, making them particularly vulnerable to developing PTSD as a work-related injury or condition.

Personal factors—like previous traumatic exposure, age, and gender—can affect whether a person will develop PTSD. What happens after a traumatic event is also important. Stress can make PTSD more likely, while social support can make it less likely.

Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing PTSD, many of which are beyond an individual's control. For instance, having a very intense or long-lasting traumatic event or getting seriously injured during the incident makes PTSD more likely. PTSD is also more common after certain types of trauma, such as combat, being the victim of an unprovoked attack, or sexual assault. If symptoms last more than a few months, it may well be PTSD.

PTSD often aligns with anxiety, depression, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), especially among the Veteran population, creating a complex web of challenges that frequently lead to substance misuse as a form of self-medication and a subsequent diagnosed mental health or substance use disorder.
